Devices

Every device is a real 3D model at its real dimensions. You can put as many into a scene as you like, different ones side by side included.

The size is a recommendation, not a requirement. For the MacBooks and the Studio Display it is the size of a website screenshot, because that is usually what goes on them rather than a capture of the whole screen.

Adding one#

  1. Open EinsetzenGerät …. Or right-click the empty stage and choose “Gerät einsetzen” (add device).
  2. Pick a type on the left, that is smartphones, tablets, laptops, watches, monitors or browser windows, or search at the top.
  3. Pick the finish on the right if there is more than one.
  4. Add it. Double-clicking the tile does the same.

Color and band#

You pick the finish when adding the device, or later in the right-hand column next to “Gerät”. Depending on the model the field is called “Farbe” (color) or “Armband” (band). There is no free color picker for the case. Every color is a model of its own, the way the manufacturer builds it.

Swapping a device#

The “Gerät” field in the right-hand column swaps the model for another of the same type, an iPhone for a Pixel, a watch for a watch. Position, screenshots and motion stay as they are. “Gerät wechseln” in the menu does the same. Swapping a phone for a laptop is not possible, add a new device for that.

Placing and turning#

Select the device and “Verschieben” and “Drehen” appear in the toolbar. You drag the gizmo, or type values under “Anordnung” (arrangement) in the right-hand column. While dragging, a magnet snaps to the center of the frame, the floor and other objects, and guides show what it snapped to. Hold Alt to switch the magnet off.

  • “Auf Boden absetzen” (B) puts the device down on the floor or on the object below it.
  • “Zur Kamera drehen” (F) turns its front toward the viewer.
  • “Duplizieren” in the menu makes a copy of the device.

Size#

Under “Grösse” you scale a device between 10 and 400 percent. 100 percent is its actual size, the dimensions in millimetres are shown underneath. Going smaller helps when a Studio Display and a phone need to share a frame.

Note

For depth, move a device further back rather than making it smaller. Otherwise the proportions are off, and that shows immediately.

The MacBook lid#

On a MacBook, the “Klappe” (lid) slider sets the opening angle, from closed to 130 degrees. It snaps at 90 degrees, where the display stands upright. In a film, a motion can open and close the lid, see Animation and the timeline.

When a model is missing#

If a model fails to load, a plain stand-in with the same dimensions takes its place. The editor stays usable, and the screenshot still sits on the display. If it stays that way after reloading, write to us through contact.
