Camera and framing

A project has exactly one camera setting. Whatever changes over time in a film is handled by auto-motion. This page is about the view itself.

Moving the camera#

The camera only moves in “Kamera” mode (key 4). In move, rotate and animation it stays put, so dragging a device never turns the view by accident.

Mouse Effect
Drag with the right button Orbit the camera around the scene.
Drag with the left button on empty space Pan the view.
Wheel Zoom.

Helpers#

Key Effect
E Frame the selection, or everything if nothing is selected.
H Reset the view to the starting angle.
K Remember the current viewpoint.
J Go back to the remembered viewpoint.
L Lock the camera so the mouse no longer moves it. Press L again to release it.

You can also lock it with the padlock that appears next to the modes in camera mode. The remembered viewpoint lasts as long as the window stays open.

Field of view#

“Bildwinkel” (field of view) under BühneKamera goes from 8 to 80 degrees. The default is 20 degrees, the long lens of product photography with its flat perspective. Lower values look flatter still, higher ones exaggerate the vanishing lines.

Behind “Standort” (position) you find the camera’s position and target as numbers. You set them with the mouse, the fields are for reading off and for the last millimetre.

Output format#

Under BühneAusgabeformat you set width and height in pixels. The stage always shows exactly that frame. “Vorlage” (preset) offers the common formats.

Preset Size in pixels
Querformat 16:9 1920 × 1080
Quadratisch 1080 × 1080
Hochformat 9:16 1080 × 1920
App Store 6,9 Zoll 1320 × 2868
Website-Hero 2560 × 1440
Eigenes Format Any width and height, from 16

Note

The format is the base size. When exporting you can still double or quadruple it, see Exporting images.

What looks good#

  • Crop tighter than you think. Too much air makes a device look lost.
  • Let devices overlap. Only the intersecting silhouettes create depth.
  • Turn them toward the middle. Devices on the left face right, devices on the right face left, and the group looks at you.
  • Do not put small right next to big. A watch next to a MacBook disappears. Place it clearly beside it or well in front.
